Reconciling Celebration and Mourning:
Rethinking Israel/Palestine After 60 Years

Dr. Jeff Halper

Tuesday, April 15
7:30 PM
North Carolina State Campus
Mann 216

This May marks the 60th anniversary of the "birth of Israel."  The event is celebrated in Israel as the Israeli Day of Independence and is mourned in Palestine as the day of al-Nakba (the catastrophe).  Dr. Jeff Halper will discuss the potential for reconciliation between these peoples whose lives have been impacted in starkly opposing ways by the outcomes of the 1948 War.

Dr. Halper is an Israeli-American peace activist, professor of anthropology, distinguished author, and internationally acclaimed speaker.  In 2006 he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by the American Friends Service Committee. He is the author of Obstacles to Peace: A Reframing of the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict, a widely used resource manual of articles and maps.  His new book, An Israeli in Palestine: Resisting Dispossession, Redeeming Israel, has just been published by Pluto Press.

Presented By: Coalition for Peace with Justice, Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions-USA, Muslim American Public Affairs Council, Muslim American Society, & North Carolina Peace Action

Co-Sponsored By: Raleigh FIST, Peace 1st, Peace and Social Concern Committee of the Durham Friends, SPEAC UNC, Triangle Tikkun, & Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom – Triangle Chapter
