The Dogs of War

It is now apparent, after almost a week of War that our troops are being received with less than wild enthusiasm by the Iraqis. Our Government went to war because it was certain Saddam had weapons of mass destruction but they can’t seem to find them. Iraq is a big country we are told and we must be patient. Even if the weapons are not found "Operation Iraq Freedom" will liberate some long-suffering people as the quest for the illusive weapons continues. Besides Saddam is a nasty man and the neighborhood will be better off without him. Never mind that in the process we might inadvertently kill a few thousands people, occupy somebody else’s country and privatize its oil. Only a Jonathan Swift can do justice to this farcical reasoning.

Like all other Imperial powers we believe our altruism will win the day. Other conquering armies, in an earlier era had similar dubious goals – they wanted to make Christians of their enemies even if they had to kill every last one of them. This colossal arrogance will result in a quagmire, which appears to have started nascent asymmetric warfare. The pity of it all is that in addition to releasing the dogs of war with all the attendant instability, destruction and loss of life, we appear to be loosing our liberty at home while trying to bring it to others abroad.
