Letter to Raleigh News & Observer [to CPWJ Letters page] [ to CPWJ home page] Feb 7, 2003Anti-Arab Bigotry in N&O Yet again, an article in the N&O, "For the world, another day to mourn," (Feb. 2) exhibits anti-Arab bigotry. The reporter declares that the deaths of the astronauts "drew unaccustomed expressions of sympathy from the Palestinians, both ordinary citizens and the government of Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat." Unaccustomed? I recall that Arafat promptly expressed sympathy for the victims of Sept. 11. In 1995, he even expressed sympathy for the death of Yitzhak Rabin, a man who once ordered Israeli soldiers to break the limbs of Palestinian children. As long as newspapers such as the N&O demonize Palestinians and other Arabs, Americans will probably continue to support Israel's brutal subjugation and oppression of them. And we will believe that we are attacking Iraqis because they are evil and dangerous, not because they are sitting on oil reserves that we covet. John Crane |
