Letter to Dan Rather & other news editors [to CPWJ Letters page] [ to CPWJ home page] October 9, 2002 Cover war protests, please Dear Mr. Rather and other news editors, As an American citizen concerned about our country starting a war, which I feel is unjustified, and backed by inadequate, ?inaccurate data, I am also very unset by lack of national media coverage about the huge popular protest movement by US citizens. There was a war protest over the weekend in NYC of 30-50,000 people that did not get national coverage by CBS. Where were you and why are you only showing the President's side. As a US citizen who values free speech and democratic airing of all opinions, I feel paranoid that the media is being controlled by the Administration or either professional journalism has died. If you must conform to sound bites, please include some of the active and passionate protest movements against this war! I was in Vietnam 69-71 as a nurse with Vietnam Christian Service and I learned that war is HELL for everyone, especially innocent civilians and the society as a whole. Not only will many innocent people be killed if we are the aggressor in this war, WE will suffer too. I have no doubt that 9/11 will look mild in contrast to the retaliation we will suffer. I think it is totally naive to think otherwise. Please do something about this in your role of champion of freedom of information and servant of the public good through excellent media coverage. Thank you very much. Martha Henderson PS: I also think you need to show the Palestinian side of the Middle East war and current seige by the Israelis. This is unbalanced and unfair reporting, eg you show suicide bombings of Israeli civilians, which is heinous, but don't mention the 159 Palestinian civilian deaths at Israeli checkpoints because medical emergencies are not allowed to get through!
