4th Congressional District: More than Arabs love lawmaker

Bill Torpy missed an important point in his report on the government's harassment of out-of-state supporters of U.S. Rep. Cynthia McKinney ("Some McKinney donors probed for terror ties," News, Aug. 3).

The out-of-state support has been sparked by widespread concern over the defeat of McKinney's congressional colleague, Earl Hilliard, in Alabama's primary in June. Like McKinney, Hilliard is an outspoken African-American critic of Washington's policies of supporting Israel at the expense of Arab lives and human rights. The same outsiders who flooded Hilliard's district with money and propaganda are now working to replace McKinney with Denise Majette.

McKinney's outside support is not coming solely from Arabs and Muslims, as Torpy's story implied. She represents her constituents politically, but to people of all races and creeds, working for more justice in U.S. foreign policy, she also represents hope for a better world.
