Coalition for Peace with Justice
Letter to Senator Jesse Helms
by Paul D. Boyle

[to CPWJ Letters page]  [ to CPWJ home page]

July 29, 2002

Dear Senator Helms,

I am writing to you both as a North Carolinian constituent and in your
capacity as ranking Republican member of the Senate Committee on Foreign
relations.  I noticed in the list of witnesses for the upcoming hearings
on Iraq that the names of some important potential witnesses are missing
from the panel.  The United States' foreign policy with regard to Iraq
is of vital importance, particularly in times when the Adminstration
seems to be posturing for war against this country.  In order to provide
a comprehensive review of the situation in Iraq, I urge you to invite
the following persons to participate in the panels:

  Mr. Scott Ritter.
As you know, Mr. Ritter is the former UNSCOM Chief Weapons Inspector,
and has firsthand knowledge of the situation in Iraq.  I would think the
Committee would be very interested in his perspectives on the situation
in Iraq.  I urge you to extend an invitation to Mr. Ritter.

  Mr. Hans Von Sponeck.
Mr. Von Sponeck is a former UN Humanitarian Coordinator, who has spent
time in Iraq.  Again, Mr. Von Sponeck's first hand knowledge of the
situation in Iraq is worthy of the Committee's attention.  Please extend
an invitation to him regarding the discussions concerning Iraq.

Thank-you for your time and efforts.  I feel confident that you will
fulfill your duties as a member of the US Senate in providing fair and
balanced hearings regarding the issue of Iraq.

  Sincerely,

  Paul D. Boyle
