What is the Shufat Refugee Camp Community Center?
The Community Center, run by Dr.
Salim Anati, is located in the Shu'fat Refugee Camp which is surrounded
by Israeli settlements. The separation wall will soon totally isolate it from
Jerusalem.
This camp has been exposed to numerous problems with the Israeli
Occupying Forces:
-
Drinking water has been cut off since 1987.
- There
is no sewage system.
-
Continuous raids on the camp are carried out.
- A heavy
tax burden is placed on commercial shops and merchants.
The overcrowded situation and the population increase in the camp
by displaced Palestinians from the West Bank produces
intolerable social,
educational, health, environmental, and psychological problems.
Some of these include:
-
70% unemployment
-
Extreme level of poverty
-
Dense, overcrowded population
-
Inadequate sanitary conditions
-
Psychological problems related to the violence especially of
minors
-
Inadequate
social services
-
Lack of
infrastructure
What does the Shufat Refugee
Camp Community Center do?
The Community Center at the Shufat Refugee Camp provides health
and education programs and activities to help ameliorate the immensely difficult
conditions endured by the Palestinians there. Below are the services provided,
but please realize that each one of them is underfunded and understaffed. It is
for this reason that we are asking for your generous donation.
-
Physical therapy to treat back and
spinal cord injuries, broken bones, muscle problems, rheumatism and other
ailments. 70 to 100 cases are treated per month by one therapist and one
assistant.
-
Toys library aimed at giving
children the opportunity to increase manual dexterity, mental acuity and to
have fun.
- A special
class for mentally retarded children
who are cared for and taught simple life skills like eating and cleaning
themselves; in addition, a special physiotherapy program is available.
-
Special education program for
children with learning disabilities.
-
House visits by a social worker who
visits families in need and refers to other services in the Community Center
or through the services network.
- Summer & winter
camps for children, families and the
disabled .
-
Lectures & symposiums in subjects
such as peace, health, human rights, needs and daily problems
-
Speech therapy with a specialist to
enhance the speaking abilities of children with speaking problems.
-
Educational activities for children
and families.
-
Psychological service for children
and families.
Please help us to fund and increase the Community Center's projects
THANK YOU!
