BIOGRAPHIES FOR BOARD ELECTION/RE-ELECTION
January 14, 2012

On Saturday, January 14, 2012, the Coalition for Peace with Justice will hold its Annual Membership meeting. Every year some standing board members are up for re-election and some possibly for election the first time.

This year Mary Lou Leiser Smith is up for re-election and Steve Feldman for election to the board. Following are biographies of both individuals so that interested members may learn more about them in order to vote:

MARY LOU LEISER SMITH
A longtime educator and Middle East peace activist, Mary Lou is one of the founders, and currently Coordinating Director, of the Coalition for Peace with Justice. She also serves in a leadership capacity with other peace and human rights groups that support just peace efforts in Israel and Palestine. Her frequent travels to Israel-Palestine inform her work in education and advocacy of the dynamic changing realities that impact the prospects for justice and peace. She has received several awards for her work: the NC International Human Rights Award, the Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Peace and Solidarity Award, the News and Observer “Tar Heel of the Week”, the SWOOP Sisters of Strength Nomination for Entrepreneurship and Social Justice, and the NC Peace Action Peacemaker Award.

DR. STEVEN R. FELDMAN
Steve is a professor of dermatology, pathology, and public health sciences at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He was born in Washington, DC, and attended grade school at the Hebrew Academy of Washington, a school that his grandfather helped to found. His family was active in the orthodox Beth Shalom Synagogue where Feldman attended services and had his bar mitzvah. Steve received his bachelor’s degree with a focus in chemistry at the University of Chicago. He received his MD and PhD degrees from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, in 1985, and then completed his dermatology residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his dermatopathology residency at the Medical University of South Carolina, in Charleston. Since 1991, he has been on the faculty at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
